Expansion joints are used to separate slabs and concrete from other parts of the structure. Expansion joints allow independent movement between adjoining structural members, minimizing cracking when such movements are restrained.
Expansion joints are recommended to be filled to prevent water from penetrating the joint and deteriorating the sub-base. You will also minimize debris, mold, and erosion from under your slab. This will help extend the life and integrity of your slab.
The following 5 steps will help explain the process and materials.
1) Remove wood or any material from your expansion joints..
2) Grind inside the expansion joints. This will smooth the areas and allow best results when sealant is applied.
3) Fill expansion joints with sand at the lower areas. This will minimize moisture and any growth of mold, grass, and weeds.
4) Add Backer Rod which serves as a concrete bumper / guide when the concrete moves during temperature changes.
5) Apply the 2 component self leveling polyurethane-based, elastomeric sealant. We recommend 24 hours for product to cure properly.
